ACT Policing in collaboration with partners in Emergency Services, Defence forces and the ACT Brumbies Rugby Union team, united at stalls around Canberra to raise money and awareness for a worthy cause.
Last Saturday marked the start of a week-long series of events leading up to White Ribbon Day on November 25, the United Nations International Day for elimination of violence against women.
The aim was to help communicate with young men and boys – the men of tomorrow – about their responsibilities in preventing this violence from occurring and to create social change.
Last year the stalls raised around $8000 but this year, the final tally was more than double: $20,322.60.
Acting Chief Police Officer for the ACT Bruce Hill extended his thanks to all those men and women who gave up their time to support this very important cause.
“This amazing total is all due to several key factors: your energy and personal support for this very worthwhile cause, and the generosity of the Canberra community.
“As a White Ribbon Day Ambassador, I feel very proud to be part of an organisation which always, without hesitation, steps up when required, and to work in partnership with other agencies who feel the same way,” Commander Hill said.
White Ribbon Day wristbands and ribbons are available at Winchester Police Centre, from the Media and Marketing Team.
A White Ribbon Day BBQ was also held on Friday at the AFP Headquarters which raised $1165.00 in a record sell out time of 90 minutes.
An official launch event was held by Commissioner Tony Negus and guest speakers included Executive Director of the Australian National Committee for UN Women Julie McKay, Department of Health and Ageing Tackling Indigenous Smoking National Coordinator Dr Tom Calma, and Mr Shaun Fensom and Mr Joe Picker who represented the Canberra Raiders.
