Tweeting at Sydney Town Hall

27 September 2011

On 1 September 2011 we hosted our 6th Annual White Tie Gala Dinner, sponsored by AHG. The evening included a great mix of entertainment, debate, fundraising and the White Ribbon Ambassador of the Year Awards.  Although in Sydney, this is a national event and provides White Ribbon with critical funds to support the operation of the national office.

Hosted by White Ribbon Chairman Andrew O’Keefe and media personality and Ambassador Adam Spencer, the evening was shared by 400 guests and officially marked the start of the 2011 White Ribbon Campaign, including the launch of White Ribbon’s new branding and Website.

This year we announced eleven inspirational finalists in the ‘White Ribbon Ambassador of the Year Award’ sponsored by Suzanne Grae.  After much suspense, Mick Doleman, Deputy National Secretary at the Maritime Union of Australia, was announced as Ambassador of the Year 2011. In accepting the award Mick shared some motivating anecdotes regarding his role as an Ambassador and he also acknowledged the dedication and hard work of all award finalists.

Guests were entertained by The Great Debate on the topic: ‘Shakespeare would have tweeted’ - moderated by Elizabeth Broderick, Sex Discrimination Commissioner.  The affirmative team included The Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP and Greg O’Mahoney, and the negative team included the Hon. Tony Burke MP and Adam Spencer. Both teams vigorously debated the topic with gusto, humour and intellect, but the jury’s still out on this one. The debate was officially declared a draw!

While dining, guests were treated to a performance by the UnitingCare Burnside Newpin Choir – whose original songs represented their hopes for a future free of domestic violence.

The silent auction included 40 amazing prizes such as a trek to the Kingdom of Bhutan, artwork, food and wine experiences, and even horse whisperers!

The exciting raffle draw saw one lucky ticket holder win a Hyundai Elantra MD donated by AHG and another lucky winner take home a stunning diamond pendant donated by Canturi Jewels.

Thank you to our sponsors and supporters for helping to make the 6th Annual White Tie Gala Dinner a fantastic evening of fundraising and entertainment. Thanks also to everyone who pre-purchased raffle tickets. All funds raised from this event will support our primary prevention work with communities, schools, universities and workplaces.

Next year we plan to host more White Ribbon run fundraising events across Australia – we hope you can get involved!
