Share the Load this Festive Season

As we head into the festive season, White Ribbon Australia is asking all Australians to think about the roles we play at this time of the year and how we might “share the load”.

Share the Load.

As we head into the festive season, White Ribbon Australia is asking all Australians to think about the roles we play at this time of the year and how we might “share the load”.

But before we get there, let’s take a moment to reflect on the jobs expected of us over the coming weeks and ask if gendered expectations are at play in the division of that labour. Whether that’s in our homes, workplaces, the local sausage sizzle, or at any other gatherings over the holiday season.

Think about it. When organising a family get-together, who does the planning and the shopping? Who does the cooking? Who buys and wraps the presents? Who’s standing around the barbie drinking beers? Who clears the table and does the dishes? Who puts the children to bed?

Ask yourself is this a choice, or assumption? And am I free to negotiate what role I play?

So please, take a moment to be flexible in your thinking about the roles we play and how shifting beliefs and attitudes can help create a nation where women are free from gendered bias.

Over the next two weeks we’ll be posting self-reflecting questions about this division of labour. We encourage you to look, reflect and use them as conversation starters as you prepare to attend celebrations over the festive season.

As we move into 2022, we call on all Australians to learn what they can do to end gender-based inequality, violence and abuse, in our homes, workplaces, schools, clubs and communities.

Australia, it’s time to share the load.
