Family Violence – Why should it matter to Psychiatrists?

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Family Violence Working Group explore models of power and control, entrapment, cultural awareness, as well as gendered patterns of harm. Dr Manjula O’Connor presents a case history presenting to a psychiatrist in acute distress . The case is analyzed to explore how she is coerced into dependence and entrapment using the lens of the ecological model – ie societal, cultural and family gender roles and expectations . The next three presentations explore the negative impact of FV on on her mental health , the next generation, risk assessment and understanding what is culturally nuanced responsiveness
