Prevent men’s violence against women

Ambassador Q&A: Andy van Emmerik

Andy van Emmerik
September 2016

White Ribbon Ambassador Andy van Emmerik is passionate about making a positive impacting change on his community regarding attitudes to gender quality and domestic violence.

What is your day job?

A consulting Business Development Manager. I work mostly with Engineering type businesses but have a diverse customer base.

How long have you been a White Ribbon Ambassador?

Since March 2016

Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?

Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman spoke to the Tasmanian Leaders about the role that White Ribbon plays in changing community norms about the acceptable treatment of women by men. While there are women’s support organisations that deal with post trauma consequences of violence, I am inspired by the cultural change that White Ribbon can achieve and the role that this will have in preventing violence against Women.

In what ways have you been involved in the White Ribbon Campaign?

I have been attending a local Government forum for community change of family and domestic violence and have been representing White Ribbon on these issues. I have listened with horror to the traumatic events that happen in the community and appreciated the support from a network of professionals together with whom I have developed constructive programs and events to inspire community members to stand up against the use of violence as a method of interaction. This violence is not just physical but emotional, financial and even social.

Why is Gender Equality important to you as an Ambassador?

Gender Equality is important to me for three reasons:

  1. Not to utilise the skills of women is wasteful – they have great social skills that our society needs;
  2. By addressing Gender Equality we also address other forms of discrimination; and
  3. By addressing Gender Equality we make our social networks more effective, our workplaces more productive and our friendship networks more useful in the wide range of life experiences we will personally encounter.

What goals do you hope to accomplish as an Ambassador in the future?

I am hoping to increase the collaboration of the Ambassadors in Tasmania so that we can be more effective in promoting attitudinal change in our Tasmanian community.
