White Ribbon Ambassador Rod Reeve from the Northern Territory aims to bring about change and awareness as Ambassador to remote locations and workplaces.

What is your day job?

I am the Managing Director of Ninti One Limited, Alice Springs. Ninti One builds opportunities for people living in remote Australia through research, innovation and community development. I also undertake strategic assignments for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which takes me to many interesting places overseas.

How long have you been a White Ribbon Ambassador?

Since 2015

Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?

I became an Ambassador to be a role model for the people that I interact with in everyday work and life generally. I felt like I needed ‘to make a stand’ to prevent men’s violence against women.

In what ways have you been involved in the White Ribbon Campaign?

My main contribution has been facilitating Ninti One working towards becoming an accredited White Ribbon workplace.

Why is Gender Equality important to you as an Ambassador?

I have been fortunate enough to complete a TAFE Certificate in ‘Gender and Development’ when I was starting out as an international consultant in the 1980s. That really opened my eyes to the impact of (often well-meaning) development programs in developing countries. For example, agricultural scientists congratulated themselves when they introduced rice varieties that could produce two crops a year instead of only one, in some dry areas of Indonesia. What this actually meant for the women of the villages was much, much more work on top of their already full lives – because the women did many of the jobs for rice cultivation such as grow the seedlings, plant them out, weeding, harvesting…on top of many family duties.

I think it’s important to bring this thinking to programs that outsiders often design for communities in remote Australia.

What goals do you hope to accomplish as an Ambassador in the future?

  • Ninti One as an accredited White Ribbon workplace
  • Enhanced awareness of the effects of male violence towards women.
  • Male violence towards women eradicated in Australia.
  • Continued gender equity on aRode ll of Ninti One’s programs.
