October 2016

White Ribbon Ambassador Tom Whittenbury has been inspired to advocate for White Ribbon, learning from his personal and workplace experience witnessing male violence against women.

What is your day job?

Pathways and Day Centre Manager for the Hutt St Centre, Adelaide

How long have you been a White Ribbon Ambassador?

Approximately 2 months

Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?

I have always valued the cause of White Ribbon and what the organisation stands for. I have personally seen the damage that domestic abuse has had on women and children in both my personal and professional life. As a manger for a homelessness service, I believe that as an Ambassador I can spread the word of White Ribbon among other community services, educate men on the different types of abuse and support victims. I feel all men have a role in stopping the abuse and I plan on doing what I can, to stop the ever growing statistics that we constantly see on the evening news.

In what ways have you been involved in the White Ribbon Campaign?

I attended the 1,000 Men campaign at Mercedes Benz Adelaide in July, 2016, The Ambassadors Breakfast in September, 2016 and I am also planning on raising funds and awareness for White Ribbon within my workplace on White Ribbon Day on 25 November.

Why is Gender Equality important to you as an Ambassador?

Gender Equality was important to me before I became and ambassador and even before I even had heard about White Ribbon. I grew up in a family of sisters and was taught at a young age, to always treat women with respect. No one, no matter of their sex, age, race, sexual preference, political view, and religion should be treated any differently to how we would want to be treated ourselves. Gender equality breaks down barriers and allows everyone to have voice, some people need help in finding their voice and as an Ambassador, I am happy to assist them with that.

What goals do you hope to accomplish as an Ambassador in the future?

As an Ambassador, I wish to raise awareness and funds for the White Ribbon cause through different event ideas. I wish to facilitate groups/workshop at my workplace, to raise awareness on domestic abuse and to give victims information on where they can access support. I plan on continuing to take a stand when I hear or see something that is a form of abuse and to support victims should they need it.
