Ambassador Q&A: Andre De Barr

Andre De Barr
July 2016

White Ribbon Ambassador Andre De Barr and Director of Shareek Consulting, speaks about his motivations and his future goals in the role.

What is your day job?

I am the Director of Shareek Consulting.

How long have you been a White Ribbon Ambassador?

I have been a White Ribbon Ambassador for about 4 years.

Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?

I became a White Ribbon Ambassador because I realised that many of the women in my social circle had been directly impacted by domestic violence. I was also concerned at how matter of fact people seemed to be about this form of violence and felt that I needed to learn and do something. I was naturally drawn to the White Ribbon movement because of its focus on men and addressing the problem at its root cause – primary prevention.

In what ways have you been involved in the White Ribbon Campaign?

As an Ambassador for White Ribbon I have always promoted the need for understanding male violence and how this impacts women in particular. More recently, I have been involved in forming the White Ribbon Committee in Western Australia. This is my focus now and I intend to see this team grow to ensure that effectiveness of the White Ribbon campaign is further realised and continued here in Western Australia.

Why is Gender Equality important to you as an Ambassador?

I have two daughters. I want them to grow up in a world where equality is the norm. No person should have to suffer abuse especially in their own home, or to be systemically disadvantaged on the basis of their gender. Beyond this, I truly believe that gender quality is critical to the advancement of humanity.

What goals do you hope to accomplish as an Ambassador in the future?

I aim to see a more robust White Ribbon framework established here in Western Australia so as primary prevention can go on to be understood and implemented in workplace’s, schools, clubs, organisations and the like. Without the societal change family violence will continue. We need to continue to organise, advocate and act towards systemic social change.
