Ambassador Q&A: Brent Wilson

Brent Wilson
June 2016

White Ribbon Ambassador Brent Wilson and a police patrol Sergeant with the South Australia Police (SAPOL) talks about the importance of leading by example in the effort to address men’s violence against women.

What is your day job?

I am Patrol Sergeant for the South Australian Police.

How long have you been a White Ribbon Ambassador?

I have been an Ambassador for about 4 Years.

Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?

I felt it was important for me as a leader of my team and a role model within my work group to stand up and let my colleagues and members of the public know that I opposed violence against women. I wanted to create an environment amongst my team where such violence would never be tolerated, and also to encourage others to stand up in support of the women in their lives.

In what ways have you been involved in the White Ribbon Campaign?

As an Ambassador, I have been involved in organizing and participating in workplace White Ribbon events. I have also had an active role within my workplace promoting the White Ribbon Campaign and have attended White Ribbon events to represent my local service area.

Why is Gender Equality important to you as an Ambassador?

In the past, I have witnessed the inequality within my own workplace in my time in the job, and believe that any initiative to eliminate bias against women is extremely important. I believe it is extremely important within SAPOL for senior management to focus on the women already within their organization and assist them to be able to progress through the ranks and not be penalized for their family choices or commitments.

What goals do you hope to accomplish as an Ambassador in the future?

I would like to see women returning to work within my organisation to have the same opportunity for promotion as everyone else and not be penalised for their family commitments. I would like violence against women to be a cause that all men were proud to support and be willing to stand up in support of the women in their lives.
