Ambassador Q&A: Eaian Maclean-Russell

Eaian MacLean-Russell
March 2016

White Ribbon Ambassador Eaian Maclean-Russell is a proud White Ribbon supporter and actively shares the message in his role in the Royal Australian Navy.

What is your day job?

I’m a Leading Seaman Medic in the Royal Australian Navy.

How long have you been a White Ribbon Ambassador?

5 Years

Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?

Through personal experience, and in my professional role, I’ve witnessed many and various forms of abuse. So when I discovered the White Ribbon Campaign, I saw an opportunity for me to be able to contribute meaningfully and champion the cause personally within the Navy and community.

In what ways have you been involved in the White Ribbon Campaign?

I’ve had some great opportunities to promote White Ribbon at work, particularly since the Royal Australian Navy became a White Ribbon accredited workplace in 2014. Recently, I represented White Ribbon at a pre-school ‘Safety Day’ where the kids learned about feeling safe in their homes and community.

Not only am I privileged as a medic to be able to provide an avenue of confidentiality, understanding and support, but as a Leading Seaman I am also able to demonstrate and promote acceptable behaviours and the need for change. Part of the Navy’s involvement in White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation is regular White Ribbon presentations and events, where I address everybody in the workplace and engage with them to recognise gender equality issues, discuss men’s violence against women and challenge behaviours and attitudes.

Why is Gender Equality important to you as an Ambassador?

In the Defence Force, I work with women who are no less accomplished or capable than any man and our organisation benefits greatly from this. Equality isn’t just a one-way street to appease the minority, equality is breaking down barriers that stop people from living fulfilling and successful lives and contributing to a better, stronger and healthier community.

What goals do you hope to accomplish as an Ambassador in the future?

As an Ambassador, I’m looking forward to contributing to the Navy’s re-accreditation as a White Ribbon Workplace. Furthermore, I’m developing a plan for my local government to bring White Ribbon into community services, such as the Volunteer Fire Brigade, of which I’m a member of, as well as the Park Rangers and SES.
